The Downhill Tee Shot: Where the Fairway Narrows

From a high tee the ball flies and runs farther, often into the trouble the flat number hides.

Hole type · Elevated / downhill tee

“The one where the fairway pinches down the hill.”

⛰ Tee set high above the fairway
⚠ Landing zone narrows / bunkers start
● Smart target: club to the widest spot
✕ Common play: driver, run through the fairway
The mistake

Reaching for driver off a high tee because it feels great, then running out through the fairway into the bunkers or rough where the landing zone pinches.

The math

Downhill adds carry and rollout, so your ball reaches farther down the hole, right where many fairways narrow or hazards begin. The extra distance often lands you in the trouble, not past it.

The correct target

Check where the fairway is widest and club to land there, frequently a 3-wood or hybrid rather than driver. Aim at the fat of the landing zone, not the far end.

Strokes saved

≈ 0.3-0.5 strokes per hole by stopping the ball in the wide part.

“Land it where the fairway is fattest, not the furthest.”

Strokes-saved figures are approximate, based on expected-value (strokes-gained) course management for a mid-handicap golfer (roughly 8-18). These are real ranges, not guarantees.
